If we are talking about AutoCAD Millwork Drafting we are actually talking about using AutoCAD to produce 2 and 3D drawings for millwork industry. Great deal of objects that are drawn are just wood boxes but there are also many intricate items like mouldings, crowns, furniture toekikcs. Let's not forget windows and doors...
Using CAD in millworking has it's own good and not so good sides. Nowadays, companies are trying to find one software that will do it all: design, drawings, material take-off and estimate cost. In my long career as a draftsperson I came across many programs that are trying to do it all but were always coming short with one or two aspects...I use AutoCAD not because it's the best solution but it is the only real standard for drafting in the World.
Lately a program called Microvellum is on the mind and in the computers of many Woodworkers, Millworkers and Kitchen cabinetry manufacturers. We will talk more about Microvelum but for now let's just say: Microvelum is the closest âall in oneâ solution for these industries.
I will not talk about other software out there. Some of them I am pretty good at and some of them I can't even start to use on my own. But believe me â they are all trying one thing with more or less the same outcome and they are all saying that they are the best for this field. Some are an overkill for millworkers and the cost of those programs are usually outrages.
The thing to keep in mind is: If the software you are using is giving you what you need and hope for - then that is the right software for you. If you don't know where to start â I would always suggest AutoCAD if for no other reason then for the fact that AutoCAD is the mother of all the similar programs nowadays. I know a millwork company that is perfectly happy using Micrografx â a little more advanced MS Paint and a free version to boot.
Advice: Don't look at promises â try it out first if possible.
