Architectural Millwork

Architectural Model Making is a part of every architects life. It is by all means the best presentation tool for architects. Models are made to scale and can be just mock-up models to very detailed even workable pieces of architectural art.

Models are done in several media but they are mostly done with Plexiglas, different plastic materials, wood, cardboard, Styrofoam and other. Scale can wary – from large to extremely small.

Any Architectural Model usually consist of the Base with landscape; Building or object model and Cover made of thick, clear Plexiglas to protect the model and still be approachable.

Model making is a fun way to make a living but don't that let full you. It is a very hard way too. Mostly one ends up working very long hours in the closed, secluded areas dealing with large and small parts, fumes from different adhesives and paint and constantly being on alert not to make a mistake. One small error in measuring or cutting can spoil the effort of many hours of hard work. Also, because in model making there are a variety of power tools used constantly, one has to be very careful not to injure yourself and others in the process.

On the other hand, Model Making gives you an incite to many architectural and engineering approaches that could be very useful in ones future and in drafting too. One who has done architectural model making will definitely be more prepared to do an architectural drawing then another person who never had any incite to building elements and building procedures.

Lastly, Architectural Model Making is a trade and for some, a form of art that is slowly loosing in the battle with virtual reality in a digital world. Computers are now capable of producing a virtual real world where one can actually walk through rooms and hallways and inspect interior and exterior with great detail. In some cases even more feasible then physical model building.

Never the less, should you choose to try yourself out in model making I would have to say that you will only gain by the experience. If not because anything else but at least because you will feel a great joy of accomplishment ones your model is done and shown to the World. Cheers!

What should I do with my career? (Answers: 2) (Comments: 0)
I just got my first entry level job at Monarch Industries (www.monarchinc.com), and am going to school for Architecture. I am getting my bachelors in Architectural Engineering this coming March. I could continue work at Monarch and move up in the company. I am a junior draftsman, and people in HR spoke about me possibly moving up to Project Manager for the Architectural Millwork department in the future. This company is great, and I wouldn't mind staying there, but I kind of wanted to get some insight from people in the field.
